Abstract:
The research entitled “Prevalence of renal dysfunction among HIV patients’’. The use of
antiretroviral therapy (ART) led to a remarkable improvement in survival and reduction of
opportunistic infections worldwide. The advancement in prognosis has changed the leading
causes of mortality in HIV infected patients from infectious to non-infectious causes with kidney
disease increasingly emerging as being significant. Nevertheless, the use of ART increased the
life expectancy of people living with HIV but was found to increase the risk of having kidney
dysfunction. Though 18.2 million people worldwide were receiving antiretroviral therapy by
2016; only 40% of HIV-infected persons in sub-Saharan Africa received antiretroviral therapy as
of 2014 (Solomon, et al., 2014).
